Tai-Mei is a Taiwanese artist based in Taiwan.
Tai-Mei is the name that I chose for web3 because I’ve always wanted to reclaim the word “Tai-Mei.” The meaning of Tai-Mei is “Taiwanese Chicks”. This term used to be derogatory to refer to Taiwanese women. Even lots of people in Taiwan or familiar with the word feel embarrassed even saying the word “Tai-Mei” I didn’t really know what it means to be a “Taiwanese” or “Tai-Mei” until I left Taiwan. “Where are you from?” is one of the most common questions that I was asked. Then I started asking the questions “Who am I”, and “What it means to be a Taiwanese.” The process of unlearning and relearning begins when I started to read books like “Taiwan’s 400 Year History: The Origins and Continuing Development of the Taiwanese Society and People”, “Forbidden Nation: A History of Taiwan”, “A Taste of Freedom”, “Formosa Betrayed” and many other books. Understanding the history of Taiwan and the hundreds of years of Taiwanese resistance has made me realize what it means to be “Taiwanese” and “Tai-Mei” I realize “My Existence is Resistance” and want to tell the story of Taiwan and Taiwanese people from a Taiwanese perspective through my art.
